Service Name: Acute Unit
Description of Service:
The Acute Unit offers a wide range of hospital type services to the local community. Services on offer include care for medical conditions, and post operative care for those recovering from operations undertaken elsewhere. Care can be provided for mothers and their new born babies. Palliative care can also be provided for those people who are in the final phase of a life threatening illness.
The Unit has 12 beds + 1 bed for urgent treatment. It is staffed by two nurses 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. On call arrangements for doctors attendance is shared between Wangaratta and Beechworth surgeries. Consequently a face to face consultation will not be possible when the on call doctor is based in Wangaratta.
Patients can elect to be treated as a private patient or public patient.
Accommodation is provided in a range of single or twin rooms with ensuite facilities.
Urgent treatment services are provided which includes attending to members of the public who present following accidents or sudden illness. Consequently a face to face consultation will not be possible when the on call doctor is based in Wangaratta.
The Unit was opened in 2004 and is a modern new facility staffed by experienced, attentive nurses. We strive to ensure your stay is made as comfortable as possible and the care provided is of the highest quality.

Ambulance Transfer to another hospital from the Urgent Treatment Room
We urge everyone to hold a current ambulance subscription as ambulance transfer may be in the range of $2,000 one way to Wodonga or Wangaratta for an emergency transfer. Patients are responsible for this fee. Pensioners and health care card holders should check with Centrelink about ambulance cover.
