| ENCORE program commences in Albury/Wodonga | INDEX |
The Encore program is for women of any age, who have had breast cancer surgery at any time in their lives. Encore is a specifically designed floor and pool exercise program, provided in a supportive, non-medical environment.
As well as helping women rebuild flexibility and strength, Encore provides participatns with the opportunity to share common experiences and concerns with other women who understand.
For more information please call Michelle Allen at the YWCA on 02 60 564 560.
The aims of Encore are to maintain or rebuild muscular fitness, improve mobility and strength, help reduce disability associated with treatment, to help reduce pain or discomfort, and to maintain or improve cardiovascular(heart and circultation) and respiratory (lungs and breathing) fitness.
Women are encouraged to work at their own speed, and to their own ability, and there is no pressure to keep up with others. Participants do not have to be able to swim, and pools are at a comfortable temperature. All sessions allow time for relaxation, for information sharing and discussion, as well as informal talk usually over light refreshments. |

| 2003 Update of Albury/Wodonga Breast Cancer Resource Kits | INDEX |
A need had been identified for local information about breast cancer services which lead to the development of the Albury/Wodonga Breast Services Resource Kit and this Breast Services website in 2002. The 2003 update of the Breast Cancer Resource Kit for the Albury/Wodonga and border area is now available, and is supported by Soroptomists International, Hume Breast Services and BreastScreen NSW South West.
Contact Deidre Rennick 02 60416997 for further information.
We continue to receive excellent feedback on the kits from GPs, consumers, surgeons and Breast Care Nurses, and have made some modifications to the kits based on this feedback. |

| Sentinel Node versus Axillary Clearance (SNAC) Clinical Trial | INDEX |
A Sentinel Node Probe has been purchased as a partnership between Hume Breast Services Enhancement Program (funded by Department of Human Services BreastCare Victoria Coordination Unit) and Border Medical Oncology Research Fund, to participate in the Sentinel Node versus Axillary Clearance (SNAC) clinical trial.
Sentinel node biopsy (SNB) is the identification, removal and examination of the lymph nodes most closely related to the primary tumour and has the potential to provide information regarding axillary lymph node involvement and limit the morbidity associated with axillary surgery. SNB involves more detailed examination of fewer lymph nodes and may even be more accurate than standard axillary clearance (AC) in detecting lymphatic spread. The objectives of the study are to compare the effects of SNB versus AC in women with early breast cancer on (1) axillary morbidity, (2) observer and self-ratings of arm swelling, symptoms and function, (3) axillary recurrence rates, (4) other aspects of quality of life (5) overall survival and disease-free survival (local, distant and both), (6) use of adjuvant therapies (7) number of surgical episodes and total number of days in hospital. (NHMRC 2001).
Two Albury/Wodonga surgeons (who have obtained research ethics approval for this study from the Joint Hospitals’ Ethics Committee) have undertaken initial training in sentinel node biopsy in preparation to qualify as investigators in this trial and have commenced accruing the twenty sentinel node biopsy cases each that are a prerequisite for entry into this study.
